Lucy Jones Wins NSW Premier’s Award

Neuroblastoma Australia is delighted to announce that our founder and CEO, Lucy Jones, has been awarded the 2024 Consumer Engagement in Cancer Research Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to cancer research and advocacy.

A passionate and dedicated consumer advocate, Lucy has worked relentlessly to raise awareness about neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. Through her efforts, she has helped fund vital research aimed at developing more targeted, effective, and less toxic treatments. Her commitment is deeply personal—after losing her daughter, Sienna, to neuroblastoma, Lucy has been on a mission to improve outcomes for children with neuroblastoma.

To date, Neuroblastoma Australia has raised more than $3.5 million for neuroblastoma research and played a key role in bringing DFMO, a promising treatment, to Australian children. Her tireless work has brought new hope to families battling this challenging disease.

Beyond her work at Neuroblastoma Australia, Lucy is actively involved in the wider medical community. She serves on the Consumer and Community Committee for both Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, and she’s engaged in the redevelopment of the Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Earlier this year, she was also appointed to the Board of the Australian and New Zealand Children’s Oncology Group, where she continues to advocate for the needs of children with cancer.

Lucy’s dedication to bridging the gap between the research community and families affected by cancer has made her a true inspiration to all those working in the field.

About the NSW Premier’s Awards

The NSW Premier’s Awards for Outstanding Cancer Research, presented by the Cancer Institute NSW, is the premier awards program in New South Wales that celebrates excellence and innovation in cancer research. Established in 2006, the Awards recognise the exceptional contributions of researchers whose dedication and expertise have made a significant impact on cancer treatment, clinical trials, prevention, and research across the state. The program highlights the vital role that researchers play in advancing cancer care and improving outcomes for patients, while also fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration in the fight against cancer.

The Consumer Engagement in Cancer Research Award recognises individuals who have made a significant impact on cancer research in New South Wales by helping researchers, clinicians, and educators better understand the lived experiences of cancer patients and their families.

Lucy’s work as a consumer advocate has been invaluable in this regard, and we’re so proud to see her efforts acknowledged with this well-deserved award.
